Story

Ron Marz, Andy Lanning, and Rick Leonardi have produced epic stories spanning the Marvel and DC Universes, and even a galaxy far, far away. Now they’re joining forces to create their own cosmic playground, populating it with compelling characters and intriguing situations. With your help, we can make it a reality!

RESOLUTION is the tale of Xaan Maddox, a legendary member of the outer-space corps of heroes known as The Resolute. Now retired, Xaan Maddox has withdrawn to a remote world in solitude. Having quit THE RESOLUTE to live out her retirement on a remote world, she tends floating gravity seas, harvesting fish to scratch out a living. It’s the simple, solitary life she wants.

But former comrades arrive and attempt to recruit her to again don the exo-suit, so they can bring to justice an alien warlord who is Xaan’s former arch-nemesis. What follows forces Xaan to confront her own past, and places the entire universe in deadly peril.

THE RESOLUTE is a cosmic peacekeeping force, with members recruited from a vast array of worlds, administered by mysterious alien species known as THE HILT. Agents of the RESOLUTE are called BLADES.

Once recruited, young cadets undergo The Process, during which they are bonded with an exo-suit, fitted with skin-jacks embedded at the base of the neck, spine, wrists, and ankles. The exo-suit becomes part of each recruit, remaining bonded for life. The exo-suit can be summoned at will, generated by the skin-jacks.

The suits transmute cosmic energy called Dark Matter, granting the ability to survive the vacuum of space, super-strength and resilience, and the ability to generate energy weapons and blasts. BLADES have protected the universe time and time again. Xaan Maddox was the greatest of them. Perhaps she will be again…

Our Mission

We’re in the early, exciting stages of RESOLUTION, so Andy and Rick and Ron want to take the opportunity make the graphic novel’s creative process as inclusive as possible. While stopping short of any spoilers that would impact enjoyment of the completed story, the creation of the pages will be shared whenever possible. Supporters can be involved as the graphic novel takes shape, including opportunities for input or even being drawn into the book!

The entire process will be documented in the RESOLUTION COMPANION book, a 48-page comic-size volume that chronicles the complete creation of the graphic novel. The COMPANION will provide a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse at all stages of the story’s evolution, from script to layouts, pencils, inks, color, and lettering. Featuring extensive commentary from Ron Marz, Andy Lanning, and Rick Leonardi, the RESOLUTION COMPANION is perfect for process junkies, aspiring creators, and fans of superior storytelling.

We hope you take this cosmic journey with us!

Cover Story - Part 1

Andy Lanning

As part of our commitment to include our backers on the development of the comic and as a preview of the sort of behind- the-scenes content that will make up the RESOLUTION COMPANION book, we wanted to share with you an update that gives detail on how we created the cover image for the book.

RESOLUTION tells the story of Xaan Maddox, once a legendary member of a cosmic peace-keeping force known as the RESOLUTE. Agents of the Resolute are called BLADES and their rank/weapon class are named after edged weapons like SABRE, BROADSWORD, STILETTO, etc. The Resolute were created by a mysterious alien race known as THE HILT.
One of Rick Leonardi’s first tasks was to create an emblem for the Resolute uniforms. We knew this would be a key element to the look of the series, as we wanted to incorporate it somewhere in the logo design.
These are Rick’s original designs based on a stylized image of a sword grip, guard, and pommel, which reflects the idea that the Blades are super-powered “weapons” wielded by the Hilt. We all loved the direction, but thought the final design looked a bit like the symbol for wi-fi signal, and so Rick refined it to a design somewhere between numbers 2 and 3.
This is Rick’s final design, which evokes the look of a sword hilt and, like all the best logos, is elegant, bold and simple.
Once we had the emblem, we then gave the artwork to our design guru, the fabulous, Phil Smith, who incorporated it into the logo he was creating.

We asked Phil to work from this VERY rough sketch, with the instruction that we liked a condensed typeface, and to make it feel “cosmic” … and what better way to evoke cosmic than a bit of Kirby Krackle?

Needless to say, Phil knocked it out of the park with his first pass!

Cover Story - Part 2

Andy Lanning

Once we had our logo, we wanted to create a memorable and arresting cover image that reflected the storyline and showcased our main character, Xaan Maddox.

We wanted the cover to show both aspects of Xaan- her current life plus her time as one of the most powerful superheroes in the galaxy.

Andy sketched out the following rough to share with Rick, the idea in this was to show present day Xaan holding her old uniform with an image of her from her glory days superimposed over it to show the past and present.

We were also looking at potentially having the logo at the bottom of the cover.

At the start of the story Xaan is an ex Blade living out her retirement on a remote world called, Orbis.

Orbis is famous for its extraordinary ‘Gravity Seas’- huge bolus spheres of water that hang in the air above an arid landscape due to the weird gravitational effects of a nearby Graviton star.

We felt the image of the Gravity Seas was going to be a unique and memorable moment in the story and both Rick and Andy sketched some ideas which made it a must to include them as part of the cover image.

Rick took these elements and came back with the following sketch which incorporated bits from everything, gravity seas, superhero pose and the logo.

Nice, eh?

We unanimously agreed that this hit the mark and Rick produced finished pencils.

Rick’s cover pencils.

Rick scanned the pencils and emailed them to Andy who printed them out in blueline (which does not show when the finished art is scanned).

Andy then inked the blueline art:

This final image was scanned and sent to the awesome colorist, Neeraj Menon, who had agreed to find time in his busy schedule to color the cover.

Neeraj sent a work in progress image for review and to get feedback on the color selections.

The consensus was that this looked wonderful so Neeraj went on to complete the cover in full glorious color.

This final colored image was sent to Phil Smith who added the logo and the cover was completed and everyone was happy!

Stay tuned for more behind the scenes production updates and check out the campaign for the opportunity to own the original artwork for the cover signed by the creators!

Portfolio Review

Ron Marz

We wanted to share the layout that Luke Ross sent in for his portfolio piece, because even in layout form, we love it! You know Luke’s art most recently from all his Star Wars work, as well as his collaborations with Ron Marz on Green Lantern and their creator-owned masterpiece Samurai: Heaven and Earth.

Luke’s depiction of our hero, Xaan Maddox, and her nemesis, Tau the Desolation, is part of the RESOLUTION PORTFOLIO, one of the rewards offered in the campaign. We’ve asked a bunch of our friends to give us a hand with RESOLUTION, and we’re building a pretty spectacular list for the portfolio. In addition to Luke Ross, we’ll have pieces from Liam Sharpe, Phil Jimenez, Paul Pelletier, Greg Broadmore, Bart Sears, Darick Roberston, Ron Lim, and Peter Krause. Over the next few days, we’ll also be announcing a few more artists who will be contributing to the portfolio in the next few days. Keep your cosmic peepers peeled!

Adding Portfolio Pieces

Ron Marz

When we announced the Resolution Portfolio, we indicated there were more artists who would be contributing pieces. First up, Jeff Johnson! Jeff’s work has been widely seen at both Marvel and DC, including Green Lantern, Wonder Man, and many more. He’s also worked extensively in the animation industry.

Jeff’s finishing up his Resolution piece right now, and it will be based of one of these two sketches. We’ll share the finished piece as soon as it’s ready, joining pieces by an artist roster that includes: Greg Broadmore, Wes Craig, Phil Jimenez, Peter Krause, Ron Lim, Paul Pelletier, Darick Roberston, Luke Ross, Bart Sears, and Liam Sharpe. We’ll be announcing two more artists shortly, so check back often!

Resolution pin up art from Wes Craig!

Andy Lanning

We have more new Resolution Portfolio artwork to share!
This is a killer piece by our great pal, Wes Craig,
Wes is the co-creator and artist on Deadly Class which was made into the fantastic SYFY TV series. Before that Wes had worked with Andy on a Texas Chainsaw Massacre mini-series and the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy series.
Wes was kind enough to create this awesome art of Resolution’s hero, Xaan Maddox in her prime as a Resolute Blade!
We will provide another update when the artwork is coloured, for the time being, enjoy it in its original glorious black and white.

Inking video by Andy Lanning

Zoop

Have you ever wondered what inking a comic was like? Andy Lanning shows off some of the process in this video of his working on Resolution!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I purchase more than 1 item?

YES!  We encourage you to purchase more than 1 item! That could be multiple copies of the same reward, or you can mix and match rewards! There is no limit, unless otherwise stated in the reward description.

What's the idea behind the Rewards and Add-Ons? Can I get both?

Rewards are the priority items that the creators have chosen for the campaign. Add-Ons are meant to be secondary items that are 'unlocked' after you buy something from the Reward level. There are no restrictions on buying Rewards, but you can only buy Add-Ons if you've bought a Reward. Zoop sets this up under the direction of the creators. Some may choose to only have Rewards, some may choose an even balance of Rewards and Add-Ons, and others may choose to only have one or two Rewards with the rest of the items being Add-Ons.

Will there be a post-campaign period where you can make changes and get add-ons through a 'pledge manager'?

No - this is it! We're essentially your in-campaign pledge manager. If you are interested in supporting these creators, this is the time to do it!  And it's the exact reason we allow you to purchase as many rewards as you want during the campaign!

If I purchase rewards and then want to make changes to that purchase later on in the campaign, what is the process?

If you want to make changes, you should first cancel your original order and then start over with a new one. If you don't do that and simply process an additional order, the way our system is currently set up you may end up being overcharged for shipping -- which we could remedy for you, but it just takes that extra step of catching it and crediting you back the extra shipping, so please try the prior way first.

Where can I find your shipping rates?

Since we have an a la carte rewards system, shipping rates will vary from supporter to supporter. We use a weight-based calculation system in your checkout cart, though, so, after you enter your country, you'll be able to see it calculated in real time with each item you add.

Do you ship to my country?

Our campaigns are for a worldwide audience unless stated otherwise in the campaign. All international orders are sold with the terms DAP (Delivered At Place). You are responsible for any duties and taxes required for the shipment's entry into your country. Our carriers may require you to pay taxes and fees related to importation and customs brokerage of your shipment -- but if your item is really low in value, it may fall under the customs de minimis of most countries. For more information, please contact USPS.

If I got a reward that requires some feedback from me, how do I let you know my request?

You could e-mail us at hello@wearezoop.com with that info during the campaign if you'd like to get it out of the way. Otherwise, we'll be reaching out to all supporters of rewards that require feedback shortly after the campaign is over.

Any other questions / comments?

Please e-mail us at hello@wearezoop.com and we'll get right back to you!

How do I cancel a transaction?

You can either access the transaction through your account and click the cancel button, or contact us at hello@wearezoop.com and we'll cancel it for you and send back a confirmation email.

Cancellations of rewards or add-ons of $500 or more must be made before there are 72 hours left in the campaign. The reason for this is it can have a negative effect on the tally of the campaign. If it is a limited reward or add-on, there may not be sufficient time for someone else to purchase it, leaving the campaign possibly not funded. We ask for your courtesy of the people running the campaign when making these decisions.

What does Zoop use for checkout and when would my credit card be charged?

We use Stripe for checkout, and the interface is entirely pre-made by them. Once there, you have 15 minutes to complete the transaction. Stripe then holds the credit card info until the end of a successful campaign and charges it shortly after the campaign is over. You'll get an email confirmation with a summary of rewards and charges both after the initial pledge and after the actual charging of the card (try looking in your spam folder if you don't happen to see it in your inbox).

Does Zoop save my credit card info?

Zoop does not store or keep your credit card info. Stripe simply holds the credit card info until the end of a successful campaign and then charges it. It is strictly for this one time use and won't charge it ever again.
