The Cause

Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds features an incredible roster of comics talent united under the mission of providing relief to war-torn Ukraine, which has suffered attacks from neighboring Russia since late February.

“Like everyone, I have been sickened by the atrocities perpetrated on the Ukrainian people for nearly two months,” said Scott Dunbier, editor of the anthology, “and I had to do something, anything, to try and help. The comic-book community is full of good and caring people who have stepped up to say, ‘I stand with Ukraine,’ and to contribute to this book.”

With the exception of hard costs (printing, credit-card fees, marketing) all of the funds raised by Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds will benefit the relief efforts in Ukraine in partnership with Operation USA. Since 'time is of the essence,' once the campaign concludes and payments have been collected by Zoop, all funds will be sent to Operation USA immediately.

“We at OpUSA are so grateful for the support of Mr. Dunbier and all artists and writers involved with this project,” says Mary Dolan, Director of Communications. “Operation USA is entirely privately funded, so projects such as Comics for Ukraine play a vital role in building our capacity to provide critical relief where needed most. Proceeds from this project will have a direct impact on the lives of those deeply affected by the ongoing war—improving conditions for Ukrainian refugees in Poland and other nearby countries via the provision of emergency grants and in-kind material aid. We thank all those involved in this meaningful project.”

Operation USA supports health and education programs in order to help children and families at home and abroad recover and thrive in the wake of disasters, disease, violence and endemic poverty. Every day, they strive to meet the needs of under-served and overlooked populations so that future generations may have the tools they need to create meaningful change in their own communities and lives. Working with partners around the world, they empower communities to recover, build resiliency and thrive in the face of pervasive obstacles during a time of unprecedented global need. Since 1979, OpUSA has delivered $450 million in aid to 101 countries. Learn more at opusa.org.

Timeline

Since 'time is of the essence,' if the campaign is successful, right after it concludes and payments have been collected by Zoop, all funds will be sent to Operation USA immediately. Then we'll be working on finishing up the book. It is currently in progress.

We expect final files to go to the printer approximately three months after the end of the campaign. With the added time for printing and fulfillment, delivery of books is expected to be done by December 2022. Still, the pandemic has shown that certain conditions are simply out of anybody’s hands. However, Zoop will always be here to communicate with supporters should any delays occur, if there’s confusion about delivery, or if any other concerns pop up.

COMICS FOR UKRAINE: SUNFLOWER SEEDS BENEFIT CAMPAIGN RETURNS AT COMIC CON INTERNATIONAL

Zoop

Dozens of Creators Come Together to Extend Relief Efforts in War-Torn Country with New Art, and Exclusive Panel Presentation

SAN DIEGO, CA – Earlier this year more than three dozen comic-book writers, artists, colorists, letterers, designers, and editors announced a collection of all-new comic-book stories to raise money to aid refugees in Ukraine. The benefit anthology Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds, edited by Scott Dunbier, will see all proceeds going to Operation USA’s relief efforts in Ukraine. Dunbier and ZOOP have added an additional two weeks of funding in celebration of the return of Comic Con International this week, with the campaign closing on August 1.

The tremendously successful initial campaign blew past its funding goal just 12 hours upon launch and raised over $155,000 with nearly 1,250 contributors. The book will be full-color, 128 pages, 8 x 12 inches, featuring all-new stories, and be available in both hardcover and softcover editions with multiple campaign exclusive awards available now.

The incredible roster of comics talent assembled for Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds is united under the mission of providing relief to a war-torn Ukraine, which has suffered attacks from neighboring Russia for months. There will be multiple versions available: a hardcover with a painted cover by Alex Ross, and softcover versions by Arthur Adams, whose cover can be revealed today (and will be colored when published), Dave Johnson, and Bill Sienkiewicz. Joining the project this week are Billy Tucci with a special Rocketeer story, as well as Liam Sharp, Larry Hancock and Michael Cherkas. These four join a virtual who’s who of previously announced writers and artists, including Brent Anderson, Sergio Aragones, June Brigman, Kurt Busiek, Howard Chaykin, Colleen Doran, Joshua Dysart, Mark Evanier, Emil Ferris, Dave Gibbons, Rob Guillory, Greg Hildebrandt, Joe Jusko, John Layman, Gabriel Rodriguez, Stan Sakai, Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson, Chris Sprouse, Jill Thompson, Matt Wagner, Mark Waid, and more. For a full list of creators, including colorists, letterers, and designers, please visit the campaign page.

This Friday, fans can attend a special panel presentation from  11:30-12:30, in room 10. Contributors Mark Evanier, John Layman, Billy Tucci and Stan Sakai will be in attendance alongside editor and organizer Scott Dunbier. A representative from Operation USA will be on hand to receive the first check for Ukrainian relief efforts in the amount of $100,000.

Apart from hard costs (printing, credit-card fees, marketing) all of the funds raised by Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds directly benefit the relief efforts in Ukraine in partnership with Operation USA, so while the initial funding goal has been met, continued support will maximize the impact on the lives of those deeply affected by the ongoing war—improving conditions for Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries via the provision of emergency grants and in-kind material aid.

We're Extending the Campaign another 2 weeks

COMICS FOR UKRAINE: SUNFLOWER SEEDS BENEFIT CAMPAIGN EXTENDED FOR TWO WEEKS

Creators Come Together to Extend Relief Efforts in War-Torn Country with Additional Time for Maximum Impact

SAN DIEGO, CA – Last month, more than three dozen comic-book writers, artists, colorists, letterers, designers, and editors announced a collection of all-new comic-book stories to raise money to aid refugees in Ukraine. The benefit anthology Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds, edited by Scott Dunbier, will see all proceeds going to Operation USA’s relief efforts in Ukraine. Dunbier and ZOOP have added an additional two weeks of funding to the campaign for maximum impact to this important cause, with a new closing date of June 2.

The already successful campaign blew past an initial $35,000 funding goal just 12 hours upon launch and has since raised over $139,000 from over 1,100 contributors. The book will be full-color, 112 pages (up from the initially planned 96 pages), 8 x 12 inches, featuring all-new stories, and be available in both hardcover and softcover editions with multiple campaign exclusive awards available now.

Editor Scott Dunbier commented, “My sincere thanks to Zoop for allowing us to extend this campaign. The horrific circumstances perpetrated on the innocent people of Ukraine are heartbreaking and I urge everyone to either back this effort, or to donate to the charity of their choice. We all need to stand for Ukraine, to stand for humanity.”

The incredible roster of comics talent assembled for Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds is united under the mission of providing relief to a war-torn Ukraine, which has suffered attacks from neighboring Russia for nearly four months. There will be multiple versions available: a hardcover with a painted cover by Alex Ross, and softcover versions by Arthur Adams, Dave Johnson, and Bill Sienkiewicz. At press time, stories will be created by a virtual who’s who of writers and artists, including Brent Anderson, Sergio Aragones, June Brigman, Kurt Busiek, Howard Chaykin, Colleen Doran, Joshua Dysart, Mark Evanier, Emil Ferris, Dave Gibbons, Rob Guillory, Greg Hildebrandt, Joe Jusko, John Layman, Gabriel Rodriguez, Stan Sakai, Louise Simonson, Walter Simonson, Chris Sprouse, Jill Thompson, Matt Wagner, Mark Waid, and more. For a full list of creators, including colorists, letterers, and designers, please visit the campaign page.

“This campaign keeps moving in the right direction in terms of raising funds,” said Zoop CEO Jordan Plosky. “So, we had to ask the question of if we keep going or not, and since the goal is to provide as much funding as we can to the people of Ukraine, the answer was yes!”

Apart from hard costs (printing, credit-card fees, marketing) all of the funds raised by Comics for Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds will benefit the relief efforts in Ukraine in partnership with Operation USA, so while the initial funding goal has been met, continued support will maximize the impact on the lives of those deeply affected by the ongoing war—improving conditions for Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries via the provision of emergency grants and in-kind material aid.

Status Update on Arthur Adams' Cover

Zoop

"Hey, everybody, Arthur Adams here. Unfortunately, real-life deadlines sometimes get in the way... and while my cover will not be ready before the Comics for Ukraine campaign closes, I'll DEFINITELY have it done in time to join my fellow cover artists Alex Ross, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Dave Johnson, and all the other talented folks contributing to this worthy cause!

Thanks,
Arthur"

Neal Adams

Scott Dunbier

A titan who changed the world of comics died last night. As one of the very few artists who changed everything, comic books would not be the same if he’d never picked up a pencil. He loved the medium, and he fought the good fight for causes he believed in. He was instrumental in initiating art returns when such a thing was unheard of, he stood up for Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and the list goes on.

Regarding Comics for Ukraine. Because I knew Neal believed in fighting for important causes, for the underdog, I approached his daughter Kristine when this campaign was in the early stages, about him doing a cover. I knew Neal was sick, and Kris confirmed that it was unlikely he would be unable to contribute until his health improved. But she told me, if he was able to, he would like to do it.

Our deepest condolences to his wife, Marilyn, and the entire Adams family.

Rest in Peace, Neal.

Colleen Doran, Greg Hildebrandt and Joe Jusko Join the Project as Campaign Enters Second Week of Funding

Zoop

As the campaign enters a second week of funding, with over $110,000 from over 900 contributors raised to date, we're happy to announce that Eisner Award-winner Colleen Doran, legendary illustrator Greg Hildebrandt, and celebrated cover artist Joe Jusko have joined the project!

Colleen Doran, who will be contributing a short story called "The Flowers of Kyiv", says “(I am) honored to do what small part I can to aid the brave people of Ukraine and to celebrate Ukrainian heritage.”

Greg Hildebrandt, who will be contributing an illustration, adds “Neither Jean nor I ever expected to live long enough to see Russia attack any country simply out of greed. The savagery we have witnessed in these past weeks is beyond anything we can fathom. Our hearts break for the people of Ukraine. The loss of life is stunning. The monstrously evil insanity of Putin’s War is equal to the Turks attempt to exterminate the Armenians in WWI and Hitler’s attempt to exterminate the Jews in WWII. Any project that I can lend my art to that will thwart Putin is a project I will join with all my heart, soul and mind. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this project.”

Joe Jusko, whose art will be the featured on the title page, concludes “As a third generation Ukrainian American whose grandmother had her entire lineage erased during WWII; I am honored to contribute to this most important endeavor.”

“I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response to COMICS FOR UKRAINE,” said editor Scott Dunbier. “Not only because people have come together to support this project, and in doing so the people of Ukraine, but also the scores of comics creators—writers, artists, colorists, letterers—who have volunteered their skills since the campaign launched last week. And whether or not you back this campaign, please stand with the people of Ukraine in any way you can.”

We've also added some new items to the Rewards section, including T-Shirts and Art Prints for the Bill Sienkiewicz art that was revealed last week. Go check 'em out!

Finally, a special reveal: here's a black and white page from the six page American Flagg story that Howard Chaykin will be contributing to the book. The finish--which, by the way, has been delivered--features lettering by the legendary Ken Bruzenak, and coloring by the brilliant Yen Nitro, both of whom donated their time and extraordinary skills to this worthy cause.

Fully Funded on the First Day!

Zoop

Thank you everyone who has helped the cause so far by grabbing the book, prints or t-shirts. The book's Editor, Scott Dunbier, had this to say:

"It's gratifying to see people come together to fund this book so quickly. And thank you to all those in the comic book community who are contributing to this project, you inspire me. But there is so much more to do, there are so many families left homeless and impoverished, and the ramifications of these events are going to impact millions of people for decades to come. It's heartbreaking. Please, regardless of whether you back this campaign or not, stand with the people of Ukraine in any way you can."

Also, we've added one more talented artist to the list of contributors since launching: Joe Jusko (who has Ukrainian heritage) will now be doing the illustration on the book's title page!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does Zoop save my credit card info?

Zoop does not store or keep your credit card info. Stripe simply holds the credit card info until the end of a successful campaign and then charges it. It is strictly for this one time use and won't charge it ever again.

What does Zoop use for checkout and when would my credit card be charged?

We use Stripe for checkout because it is VERY secure. They exceed industry security standards and are trusted by thousands of companies, including Amazon, Lyft, Slack, Shopify, and Airbnb, who use Stripe's software tools to accept payments. Their interface is pre-made by them and we don't have the ability to augment it in any way. Once there, you have 15 minutes to complete the transaction by hitting the 'SAVE CARD' button. Stripe then holds the credit card info until the end of the campaign. You won’t actually be charged unless the campaign reaches the funding goal. The pre-order amount will show as 'pending' on your credit card statement until that date.

If the campaign doesn't fund, your pre-order will be canceled, and the pending charge will disappear. You'll get an email confirmation with a summary of rewards and charges both after the initial pledge and after the actual charging of the card (try looking in your spam folder if you don't happen to see it in your inbox).

How do I cancel a transaction?

You can either access the transaction through your account and click the cancel button, or contact us at hello@wearezoop.com and we'll cancel it for you and send back a confirmation email.

Cancellations of rewards or add-ons of $500 or more must be made before there are 72 hours left in the campaign. The reason for this is it can have a negative effect on the tally of the campaign. If it is a limited reward or add-on, there may not be sufficient time for someone else to purchase it, leaving the campaign possibly not funded. We ask for your courtesy of the people running the campaign when making these decisions.

Any other questions/ comments?

Please e-mail us at hello@wearezoop.com and we'll get right back to you!

If I got a reward that requires some feedback from me, how do I let you know my request?

You could e-mail us at hello@wearezoop.com with that info during the campaign if you'd like to get it out of the way. Otherwise, we'll be reaching out to all supporters of rewards that require feedback shortly after the campaign is over.

Do you ship to my country?

Our campaigns are for a worldwide audience unless stated otherwise in the campaign. All international orders are sold with the terms DAP (Delivered At Place). You are responsible for any duties and taxes required for the shipment's entry into your country. Our carriers may require you to pay taxes and fees related to importation and customs brokerage of your shipment -- but if your item is really low in value, it may fall under the customs de minimis of most countries. For more information, please contact USPS

Where can I find your shipping rates?

Since we have an a la carte rewards system, shipping rates will vary from supporter to supporter. We use a weight-based calculation system in your checkout cart, though, so, after you enter your country, you'll be able to see it calculated in real time with each item you add.

If I purchase rewards and then want to make changes to that purchase later on in the campaign, what is the process?

If you want to make changes, you should first cancel your original order and then start over with a new one. If you don't do that and simply process an additional order, the way our system is currently set up you may end up being overcharged for shipping -- which we could remedy for you, but it just takes that extra step of catching it and crediting you back the extra shipping, so please try the prior way first.

Will there be a post-campaign period where you can make changes and get add-ons through a 'pledge manager'?

No - this is it! We're essentially your in-campaign pledge manager. If you are interested in supporting these creators, this is the time to do it!  And it's the exact reason we allow you to purchase as many rewards as you want during the campaign!

What's the idea behind the Rewards and Add-Ons? Can I get both?

Rewards are the priority items that the creators have chosen for the campaign. Add-Ons are meant to be secondary items that are 'unlocked' after you buy something from the Reward level. There are no restrictions on buying Rewards, but you can only buy Add-Ons if you've bought a Reward. Zoop sets this up under the direction of the creators. Some may choose to only have Rewards, some may choose an even balance of Rewards and Add-Ons, and others may choose to only have one or two Rewards with the rest of the items being Add-Ons.

Can I get more than 1 item?

YES!  We encourage you to get more than 1 item! That could be multiple copies of the same reward, or you can mix and match rewards! There is no limit, unless otherwise stated in the reward description.
