Groom Lake - Grey Skies Above

by Chris Ryall & Nelson Daniel

From Syzygy Publishing! Groom Lake, featuring lovably inscrutable grey alien Archibald, is back in an all-new standalone graphic novel!

It’s ten years after Archibald escaped from the secret base under Groom Lake. The once-destroyed base is showing new signs of life. A conspiracy theorist warns that the “MAJESTIC 13” abductees are being returned to Earth as part of an horrific human/alien swap, and maybe worst of all, a new feature film about aliens presages even more devastating consequences for Archie and his handlers.

Written by co-creator Chris Ryall and illustrated by Nelson Daniel, with additional art by Ben Templesmith, this all-new tale shows you that those Tic-Tac UFO videos aren’t anything to worry about compared to what’s really coming our way. All that, and the true secret behind Archibald and his blobby companion, too!

Story

Writer/co-creator Chris Ryall and artist/colorist Nelson Daniel are happy to tell this tale of the six-fingered, cigarette-smoking, chocolate-consuming Blob-owning grey alien, this time threatened by the menacing Women in Black! And some new, even more menacing alien races and their government handlers/assassins in Project: Black Book, too! Plus the way-way-more-menacing group of alien-human hybrids of Majestic 13, too! A wild, conspiracy-filled time will had by all, except maybe Archibald, who is in way over his pointy grey head…

  • Groom Lake: Grey Skies Above is a galaxy-spanning romp through UFO conspiracy theories and the people who disseminate them, who believe them, and who will kill to protect the real truth behind them! As Archibald would say and has in fact said before, “Archibald is back and ready to party!”

Bio

Chris Ryall is the co-founder of the Image Comics imprint Syzygy Publishing with artist Ashley Wood. Together, they created Zombies vs Robots, lost the Eisner Award for the work on Doomed magazine, and launched Syzygy with Joe Hill’s Rain in January 2022. Ryall is a longtime comic book writer/editor/chief creative officer, and co-creator of Groom Lake, The Hollows, The Colonized, and more. He is also an EP on Netflix’s Locke & Key and BBC Studios’ upcoming Eve Stranger, and is a consultant at San Diego’s new Comic-Con Museum. He has yet to publicly tell the story about those strange lights he saw in the skies over San Diego in 2016…

Nelson Daniel is an acclaimed comic-book artist and designer. Nelson colored the ornate artwork of Gabriel Rodriguez on the Eisner Award-winning Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland; and has been Zach Howard’s longtime colorist on graphic novels such as Wild Blue Yonder and the upcoming Dead Earth Pioneers. As artist/colorist, Nelson had long runs on Judge Dredd; illustrated Wood and Ryall’s String Divers miniseries, worked with Ryall on the Joe Ryll/Stephen King adaptation Throttle, and for Legendary Comics, was the artist on Detective Pikachu and Pacific Rim graphic novels.

"Chris Ryall knows the biggest secret of all--the fact that aliens smoke... a lot.”

Whitley Strieber, Communion author

“Chris Ryall is a sure hand when it comes to developing work. Basically: he’s the man.”

-- Joe Hill, author

“Chris is the man. I trust him as a friend and as a collaborator. You get to the point where you say, ‘This is my friend, not simply my colleague.’ He's just a thoroughly decent human being who just so happens to be brilliant.”

-- Clive Barker, author/filmmaker/artist

“Chris Ryall, with whom I have worked and have come to trust implicitly, is also my friend.’”

-- the late Harlan Ellison, author/raconteur

Update #3

Chris

Hey, you early backers! Just wanted you to know you’re in good company supporting this book. The Mars Perseverence rover recently posted a picture of debris on Mars. I took a closer look and it's nice to see that the rover was also an early backer. Nice to know this has NASA’s full authorization.

Still a ways to go from really reaching that ideal “faithful 1,000” audience but we’re over a third of the way there now so that’s nice to see. On we go!

(Oh, and we're not making this up - here's the article on the debris on Mars: Link)

Update #2

Chris

Hey, everyone!

Welcome to week two of the Groom Lake: Grey Skies Above campaign! We got out of the gate in nice fashion, although we’ve still got a ways to go to make this book a reality. I’ve done a number of podcasts and interviews to discuss the book so will be available yammering plenty about what Nelson and I have planned for this book.

As I mentioned before, I appreciate the early support. And if you have alien-minded friends and acquaintances who might want to not only appear in the book as part of the “Majestic 13 alien/human exchange program” in the book but also see what Nelson does to mutate and hybridize their appearance, well, feel free to invite them in as well…

Onward, we go!

Welcome!

Chris Ryall

Hello to everyone, human and otherwise!

This is the first update of my first crowdfunding campaign so before anything else, a hearty welcome and an equally throaty THANK YOU in jumping in early on this venture.

In addition to the requisite status updates, sharing of artwork and story details, ample praise heaped on my collaborators, and other expected details that will accompany this campaign, I thought I’d first start by just discussing why more Groom Lake and more than just that, why UFO-related stories in general.

When I was a kid, one of the first Scholastic Book Fair purchases I made (well, my parents made the purchase, probably $0.60, but I made the selection) was the UFO Encounters book seen in the accompanying photo; I was by then already a comic-book fan and pre-disposed to the idea of fantastic alien planets and otherworldly beings.

The book, with its purported “real” stories about the alien abduction of people like Betty and Barney Hill, along with blurry photographic “proof” of alien crafts in our skies, brought the fantastic one step closer to real for me. As did the early trade UFO Encounters paperback collection — it adapted equally “real” stories into comic form. So I was a fictional convert early on.

It was a great time to be a burgeoning UFO nerd: TV shows like Project: UFO were available weekly; Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Alien were early favorite on the big screen. (You can see the Alien movie inspiration in Nelson's Grey Skies Above cover.)
And ever since, UFOs and alien conspiracies and all the surrounding lore have always been a fun thing to engage with, and to bring into fiction I’ve written (in addition to Groom Lake, I also once wrote a graphic novel, with artist Drew Moss, called The Colonized, which was essentially “zombies vs aliens;” and a story I contributed to an Aliens vs Predator prose anthology released in early 2022 was set in Area 51.

So aliens are a bit of a recurring theme for me, you might say.

Surely more on that was we travel along this Extraterrestrial Highway! For now, once again, my respect and appreciation to you Day One backers. And off we go!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does Zoop save my credit card info?

Zoop does not store or keep your credit card info. Stripe simply holds the credit card info until the end of a successful campaign and then charges it. It is strictly for this one time use and won't charge it ever again.

What does Zoop use for checkout and when would my credit card be charged?

We use Stripe for checkout because it is VERY secure. They exceed industry security standards and are trusted by thousands of companies, including Amazon, Lyft, Slack, Shopify, and Airbnb, who use Stripe's software tools to accept payments. Their interface is pre-made by them and we don't have the ability to augment it in any way. Once there, you have 15 minutes to complete the transaction by hitting the 'SAVE CARD' button. Stripe then holds the credit card info until the end of the campaign. You won’t actually be charged unless the campaign reaches the funding goal. The pre-order amount will show as 'pending' on your credit card statement until that date.

If the campaign doesn't fund, your pre-order will be canceled, and the pending charge will disappear. You'll get an email confirmation with a summary of rewards and charges both after the initial pledge and after the actual charging of the card (try looking in your spam folder if you don't happen to see it in your inbox).

How do I cancel a transaction?

You can either access the transaction through your account and click the cancel button, or contact us at hello@wearezoop.com and we'll cancel it for you and send back a confirmation email.

Cancellations of rewards or add-ons of $500 or more must be made before there are 72 hours left in the campaign. The reason for this is it can have a negative effect on the tally of the campaign. If it is a limited reward or add-on, there may not be sufficient time for someone else to purchase it, leaving the campaign possibly not funded. We ask for your courtesy of the people running the campaign when making these decisions.

Any other questions/ comments?

Please e-mail us at hello@wearezoop.com and we'll get right back to you!

If I got a reward that requires some feedback from me, how do I let you know my request?

You could e-mail us at hello@wearezoop.com with that info during the campaign if you'd like to get it out of the way. Otherwise, we'll be reaching out to all supporters of rewards that require feedback shortly after the campaign is over.

Do you ship to my country?

Our campaigns are for a worldwide audience unless stated otherwise in the campaign. All international orders are sold with the terms DAP (Delivered At Place). You are responsible for any duties and taxes required for the shipment's entry into your country. Our carriers may require you to pay taxes and fees related to importation and customs brokerage of your shipment -- but if your item is really low in value, it may fall under the customs de minimis of most countries. For more information, please contact USPS

Where can I find your shipping rates?

Since we have an a la carte rewards system, shipping rates will vary from supporter to supporter. We use a weight-based calculation system in your checkout cart, though, so, after you enter your country, you'll be able to see it calculated in real time with each item you add.

If I purchase rewards and then want to make changes to that purchase later on in the campaign, what is the process?

If you want to make changes, you should first cancel your original order and then start over with a new one. If you don't do that and simply process an additional order, the way our system is currently set up you may end up being overcharged for shipping -- which we could remedy for you, but it just takes that extra step of catching it and crediting you back the extra shipping, so please try the prior way first.

Will there be a post-campaign period where you can make changes and get add-ons through a 'pledge manager'?

No - this is it! We're essentially your in-campaign pledge manager. If you are interested in supporting these creators, this is the time to do it!  And it's the exact reason we allow you to purchase as many rewards as you want during the campaign!

What's the idea behind the Rewards and Add-Ons? Can I get both?

Rewards are the priority items that the creators have chosen for the campaign. Add-Ons are meant to be secondary items that are 'unlocked' after you buy something from the Reward level. There are no restrictions on buying Rewards, but you can only buy Add-Ons if you've bought a Reward. Zoop sets this up under the direction of the creators. Some may choose to only have Rewards, some may choose an even balance of Rewards and Add-Ons, and others may choose to only have one or two Rewards with the rest of the items being Add-Ons.

Can I get more than 1 item?

Yes! We encourage you to get more than 1 item! That could be multiple copies of the same reward, or you can mix and match rewards! There is no limit, unless otherwise stated in the reward description.
